The declaration of CBSE Class 12 results 2026 has sparked concern among thousands of JEE Advanced qualifiers aspiring for seats in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Despite strong performance in the entrance exam, many students are worried about meeting the mandatory board marks requirement. The Joint Admission Board (JAB) and IIT Roorkee have reaffirmed the existing eligibility rules amid complaints regarding the new On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.
IIT CBSE Marks Criteria for 2026 Admissions
For admission to IITs through JEE Advanced 2026, candidates must satisfy one of two conditions in their Class 12 (or equivalent) examination, in addition to qualifying the entrance test. General, OBC-NCL, and GEN-EWS category students need a minimum of 75% aggregate marks, while SC, ST, and PwD candidates require 65%. Alternatively, students can qualify by securing a position in the top 20 percentile of their respective board.
The aggregate is calculated based on five subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, one language (the highest-scoring if multiple), and one additional subject with the best performance. This standard ensures uniformity across all participating boards.
Note that there is no board marks requirement to appear for JEE Advanced — only the top 2,50,000 candidates from JEE Main qualify for it. However, the 75% (or 65%) criterion or top 20 percentile is essential for final seat allotment during JoSAA counselling.
Controversy Over CBSE Results and OSM System
CBSE announced Class 12 results in mid-May 2026. Many students reported lower-than-expected scores, blaming the newly introduced On-Screen Marking system for inconsistencies and delays in re-evaluation. This has left several high-ranking JEE aspirants, with board percentages around 70-74%, anxious about losing their IIT dreams.
In response to demands for a one-time relaxation, the Joint Admission Board has clearly stated there will be no change in the 75% eligibility criteria. The decision prioritizes fairness, as candidates from 36 different boards are involved, and the rules were announced well in advance. Lowering the bar for one board could create inequities for others.
Relief Option : Provisional Participation in Counselling
In a significant relief, IIT Roorkee has allowed students who currently fall short of the marks threshold to participate in JoSAA counselling. They can register, fill choices, and receive provisional seat allotment based on their JEE rank.
Candidates must submit a revised marksheet meeting the required percentage (75% or 65%) by July 15, 2026, via email to orgjee@iitr.ac.in. Once verified, admission to the allotted seat will be confirmed in subsequent rounds. This window supports students awaiting re-evaluation results or planning improvement exams.
Steps for Affected Students
• Apply for CBSE re-evaluation or verification immediately if you suspect discrepancies.
• Consider subject-wise improvement exams to boost your aggregate.
• Check your board’s top 20 percentile cutoffs as an alternative route.
• Keep all documents ready, including updated marksheets.
• Regularly monitor official websites: jeeadv.ac.in and josaa.nic.in.
Long Term Message for Aspirants
This situation highlights the need for balanced preparation that excels in both competitive exams and board examinations. The consistent 75% rule reinforces that strong academic performance in Class 12 remains a key requirement for premier engineering institutes.
Students are advised to rely only on official notifications and avoid unverified social media claims. While the core criteria remain unchanged, the provisional counselling provision offers a practical pathway for genuine cases. As JoSAA counselling progresses, timely action and documentation will be crucial for securing admission.
