NEW DELHI, June 5, 2026 – In a defining move for sustainable transport, Indian Railways has officially greenlit the country’s first hydrogen-powered train, setting a new global benchmark. The state-of-the-art train, developed under the “Make in India” initiative, will soon operate on the Jind–Sonipat section in Haryana.

World Record for Length & Power
Officials confirmed that the new train will be 10 coaches long, making it the longest hydrogen train in the world on broad gauge. It is also the most powerful in its class, generating 2,400 kW from two dedicated 1,200 kW power cars. The train can carry up to 2,638 passengers at a maximum speed of 75 km/h, with zero carbon emissions releasing only water vapor.
Strategic Shift from Electrification
“Hydrogen is a game-changer for routes where conventional electrification is cost-prohibitive or challenging due to terrain,” said a senior Railway Ministry official. The train will run entirely on green hydrogen, produced via electrolysis at a newly built plant in Jind with a storage capacity of 3 tonnes.
Safety & Indigenous Technology
Designed with comprehensive safety features, the train includes 24/7 real-time monitoring and hydrogen leak detectors. Indian Railways confirmed that the project is fully indigenous, from the fuel cell technology to the coach manufacturing.
